ST. MARYS, GA -- Camden County Sheriff Investigators say a First Coast sailor gave alcohol to children at his home to get them to run around naked.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service arrested Kings Bay sailor Steven Sydor on molestation and enticement charges. During questioning by the Camden County Sheriff's Office, investigators say Sydor, 36, admitted to allegations that warrant six felony counts of child molestation and six felony counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes.
While on duty, the Navy says Petty Officer First Class Sydor fixed submarines as a Machinist’s Mate at Kings Bay Submarine Base. Off duty, investigators say Sydor gave his victims alcohol, tried to get them to run around his house naked, played “dare” games, and touched at least five girls between the ages of 10 and 15 years old.
Sydor lives in a neighborhood of families in Kings Bay’s on-base housing area. Neighbors there declined on-camera interviews, but said they saw signs Sydor was up to something, as he often invited young girls over to play with his own kids. Deputies say a parent alerted the Navy about the behavior. Investigators with the Camden County Sheriff's Office and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service at Kings Bay arrested Sydor Monday.
Investigators seized a computer and other evidence from his home in St. Marys. Sydor is being held at the Camden County Jail. Sydor remains on active duty with the Navy. Camden County deputies say the Navy will make a decision about his future once his case has been resolved in the Georgia legal system.
