Terrorist Interdiction and Drug Enforcement team ... Its working

Ride the tide — Marijuana lands on Cumberland's shores
By Emily Goodson

Camden County deputies recently made perhaps their easiest drug seizure ever. More than 60 pounds of marijuana washed up earlier this week on the beaches of Cumberland Island, where volunteers studying sea turtles on the island found the tightly wrapped packages and turned them over to the National Park Service, said Lt. William Terrell, public information officer for the Camden County Sheriff's Office. The park service then turned the drugs over to the sheriff's office.

"Some of the bags had been punctured and were waterlogged," Terrell said, probably by natural forces like weather, rocks, sand and sticks. Terrell also said that the amount of marijuana and nature in which it was wrapped suggests that the drugs were part of a professional operation rather than being carried by a recreational user.
"It's probably part of a much larger load, actually," he said. "There's probably a lot more." Terrell said investigators are not sure where the drugs came from - whether they fell off a boat carrying a larger load, whether they drifted from a far-away location or whether the boat transporting the drugs sank.

In addition, the absence of any evidence other than the bags makes it extremely difficult for investigators to trace where they may have come from, he said. Still, the sheriff's office's Terrorist Interdiction and Drug Enforcement team is now searching for the source of the drugs, Terrell said. "They're out there looking," he said.

SOS THOUGHTS - Good Job by the Island Park Rangers, the kids on the beach, and I hope that our new Terrorist Interdiction and Drug Enforcement team can find where this came from for several reasons. First off it will keep the drugs off the street and out of the kids hands. Also cause in the future this drug money will be more money for our sheriff's department. Thus giving them more resources to continue the war on drugs. But like always the hate site"ers" are trying to say the drugs were a set up and all this. Its about time for adults to grow up and act the age that is on their drivers license. Maybe it was Rick's drugs he said he was just on the island. What were you doing on the island anyhow. Greyfield.

Yep.......I'll totally agree with you on added money for the sheriff's department - for the sheriff because he is running out of money.

Thank goodness they had sufficient horsepower - 500, to be exact - to haul that 60 lb load of marijuana.

An older, smaller boat would just simply not have done the job.

I was wondering what happened to my stash! Let me pull out my Escalade that's hidden in my one car garage and go claim that.. I can't afford to share my stash w/ Bill and his Meth maker!

It can be embarrassing when your boat breaks down. Take for instance the sheriff's dept. boat that Calvin Lang's folks had to tow in and it's way back from Cumberland Island - and yes Virginia it was the one with Dr. Chua in it.

Jay Moreno said...

I'm surpised they didn't just tie a bowline on a bight around Chua's waist with their bow line and let him walk the boat back to the dock.

Maybe the boat broke down because a new one was way over due. So that, along with everything else purchsed was needed for the people of the county. Not just wanted because we have a professional department, with highly trained and dedicated law enforcement officers. Just hope when you people need a deputy yhey can get there quickly and safe.

After exhaustive studies and design competition, the U.S. Coast Guard, the guys and gals who really are responsible for terrorist interdiction, settle on a 25 foot craft with 216 H.P.

But BTW needs, what, 26 feet, and 500 H.P.. Go figure.

Jay needs to do some more research. The safeboats in st. marys are equipped with (2) 225 hp honda outboards Further proves his ignorance. Call coast guard St. Marys and ask.

Except for Smith and Jenkins illegal use of inmate labor, can anyone tell me of a single crime that was committed on Cumberland Island in the last ten years?

I'm guessing that the listed expenditure in the drug fund audit payable for some $200 + dollars to the Greyfield was, but I do get your point.

Studies also show that the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center trains local, state, and federal agents on 31 foot Contenders with 2-250 yamahas, and has been proven to be one of the best vessels for inshore and offshore boarding of boats. This type boat is designed for multi-purpose law enforcement functions, and was overdue for the people of this county to have something this nice to ensure the safety of the local boating family and fishermen. Ounce again furnished At No Cost To The Taxpayer. So just say Thank You!!

Hey Smith employee,

Your info. on the boats might be a reason for DNR and/or the Coast Guard to have one but the taxpayers of Camden County durn sure don't need one.

The gas, insurance, truck, $120,00.00 in salaries, etc. are not a very good use of the taxpayers money not to mention what other equipment could have been purchased for the S. O. or for the Search and Rescue team, etc. with the $200,000.00 used to buy this boat.

Go back to reading your Billy the Kid dime novel and get your stinking boss out of the taxpayers pocket.

Thats funny cause your first complaint was that the sheriff was spending the drug money on this boat instead of other things then turn around and tell the sheriff to stay out of the tax payers pockets. Not one dime was spent of tax payers dollars on the boat. The salaries of the deputies assigned to the team where already a part of the sheriff's department, so there was no additional salaries added to their budget. And last but not least I have seen the old boat the deputies used and it was a piece of s***. I watched them one day have to try 5 times to get the boat to crank as they drifted off the old boat ramp before the engine fired. This is not the type of equipment OUR sheriff's department neeeds. It sounds like people with no clue complaining again about something they no nothing about.

I understand that the S. O. had 8 or 9 boats before this one. Except for taking the inmates to work on the
Smith/Jenkins house, why would they need another.

You are correct that no additional salary is being paid to Brannen, Coffel and Godley, but this is one taxpayer that would rather see them on the road not the ICW.

What I know and 90 per cent of other taxpayers agree with is that the purchase of this boat should never have taken place and your boss will know it too next July.

Roxy the school police watch dog said...

No one is questioning this purchase as illegal. This was an allowable expense. Well expect ingorning the second signature law. But at the federal level it was legal. It just wasn't needed. We just added 12 new officers because there were not enough on the streets, or atleast that was the excuse for the Jet Ski incident.

New officers what a joke cause Steve and the yes Steve gang at the Comm. see fit not to pay for a real budget. Very funny, there is only about twenty more people there now, as there was twenty years ago. The Sheriff is being constatnly told not to fill slots as people leave. He complys only trying to help keep our taxes down. If only the public knew how many man hours are spent by deputies conducting sheriff's office work and not even claiming the time for pay. It's all for the dedication to the people of the community and the job they love.

Roxy the school police watch dog said...

That is a bold face lie. They voted and passed funding for 12 new officers and we were told 12 new officers were hired. They did that to keep the trustee program going.
Are you saying Bill neverr hired them?

Please let me know.

Rick ask for the number of department employees in 1987 and the population of the county as to the number today 2007, and population of the county. You should have 1 officer on the street per every thousand population. That equals roughly 48 officers per shift X 3 = 144 officers for the streets alone in the county, not counting the jail and administraition to see that it all runs. The county, not the Sheriff is not keeping up with progresion of the county. If you cut the numbers in half we still should have at least 72 officers for the road. This is not good use of my tax dollars commissioners.
